To be, or not to be… active.

I’ve officially been a quasi-lawyer for nearly a year now. I’ve done no CLE. I’ve not read one legal book, barely read legal magazines. I’ve paid nearly $1000 in fees. I’ve earned exactly $0 in my professional life as a lawyer. And, with the exception of my bar number and my bare little record on the CalBar website, I pretty much don’t exist in the lawyer-verse.

So why am I still a card-carrying member of the Bar?

..

..

Yeah, I can’t really think of a reason, either.

I’ve increasingly been thinking about changing my status to inactive come dues time. It’s a $200+ difference, plus (I think) a reduction in the amount of CLE I would have to complete (more $$$ savings).

I’m surprised at how strongly I resist the idea. Theoretically, being active or inactive shouldn’t make a damn bit of difference. No, I wouldn’t be part of the “lawyer club” anymore, but let’s face it, I’m not in the club right now… so why bother even pretending?

I guess it just feels like the final bit of “nail” in that coffin.
