Dealing with Recruiters
20060325 18:19I’m a longtime listener of the Manager Tools Podcasts, and they are great (even for non-managers). Their most recent episode is a great one for us jobseekers. In this episode, they cover the topic of executive recruiters/”headhunters” and how to deal with them.
For me, working with recruiters has been a big part of the experience. The barrier for entry into Recruiter-land is fairly low (a good looking resume), meaning that with a little time investment, you get the return of a face-to-face interview. This is valuable because a person sells better than a resume. In addition, recruiters usually work together, meaning that if one recruiter likes you and your skills, they’ll tell their colleagues - and now you’ve got an entire office on your team. (On the downside, don’t get it twisted - for all the talk of “partnership” and “your career development,” they don’t work for you and they never will.)
This is really the first time I’ve worked with recruiters on this side of the job equation, and it’s been an education. I wish I would have heard this podcast a few months ago, but now’s better than never! If you’re a jobseeker (or a job-have’r lookin’ for a change), you’ll probably work with recruiters at some point, and a few of these tips can help you get the most out of the relationship. Take a listen!
