Dealing with Recruiters

20060325 18:19

I’m a longtime listener of the Manager Tools Podcasts, and they are great (even for non-managers). Their most recent episode is a great one for us jobseekers. In this episode, they cover the topic of executive recruiters/”headhunters” and how to deal with them.

For me, working with recruiters has been a big part of the experience. The barrier for entry into Recruiter-land is fairly low (a good looking resume), meaning that with a little time investment, you get the return of a face-to-face interview. This is valuable because a person sells better than a resume. In addition, recruiters usually work together, meaning that if one recruiter likes you and your skills, they’ll tell their colleagues - and now you’ve got an entire office on your team. (On the downside, don’t get it twisted - for all the talk of “partnership” and “your career development,” they don’t work for you and they never will.)

This is really the first time I’ve worked with recruiters on this side of the job equation, and it’s been an education. I wish I would have heard this podcast a few months ago, but now’s better than never! If you’re a jobseeker (or a job-have’r lookin’ for a change), you’ll probably work with recruiters at some point, and a few of these tips can help you get the most out of the relationship. Take a listen!

(P.S. The podcast is also available on iTunes.)

Book News

20060305 20:06

My original goal was to release the book around April.

HA HA HA. Thank you, Universe, for that wonderful little lesson on what happens to great plans…

I figured I’d be working steadily by now, and would have some productive time and mental space in which to write. Life being what it is right now, my focus has been almost entirely on the job search and working some small projects here and there. My whole life has been over there recently, so the book’s been re-prioritized.

I’m as impatient as anyone to get it out there, but I want to do it right. I really want to do justice to my and everyone’s story, and just republishing the blog won’t cut it.

Here’s to seeing the book in everyone’s favorite bookstores this summer. Please don’t forget to join the mailing list to stay informed on all the Legal Insanity!
